We need to raise £10,000 to promote sexual health in the Ugandan communities we have supported since 2009.

Why sexual health?

43% of Uganda's population is under 15, and that figure is even higher in the communities we support. Community elders have been lost to war and famine, so sexual health just isn't being taught. As a result, most young people don't even know where babies come from, let alone how to protect themselves from early pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Myths abound, like the one that having sex with a virgin will cure AIDS. Young people are particularly vulnerable and the results contribute to the impoverishment of the area. We need to break that cycle.

What have we already achieved?

In May 2018, Jayne Hanley (pictured) spent two weeks with the communities we support in Akobi and Padibe, northern Uganda. Jayne is a qualified Manx nurse and a trustee of the charity. During her visit she focused on educating the local teachers on how to pass on basic reproductive health information to the community, but more resources are needed to help make their lessons effective and widely available. We can provide that - you can see the success of our previous projects in the region by visiting our development timeline.

How will the money be spent?

  • Building a resource class room at Broadway school. The resource room will be set up in such a way that that promotes an atmosphere of relational learning. Building work in this region is relatively expensive as almost all supplies need to be transported the long distance from Kampala, but we have a lot of recent construction expertise so we can be certain the prices we pay are fair and honest.
  • Equipping the classroom with useful resources related to sexual and reproduction health, tailored to the educational level and culture of the local young people.
  • Five mobile units consisting of portable teaching materials and resources. These can be taken into the surrounding villages and more rural communities.

We have a history of very careful spending  - you can find out more about the charity and how we know where your money is going here. Please note that any money over the target mark will be used for other projects of DO! Developing Orphans, serving the same communities in northern Uganda.

What can i do to help?

Hit the big purple button below to donate as much or as little as you are able. We can take a payment from any major debit or credit card - you don't have to have a PayPal account. If you choose to make a monthly donation, future payments will go towards DO's other projects supporting the same communities.

Then tell everyone about it in person and on social media with a link back to this page. Don't by shy - we need as many people to know about this as possible and it will help if you say you have donated.

Thank you so, so much. Every donation is a spark of hope for a community that’s had so little reason to have any.
